Danzón
The slow, sensuous ballroom-style dance known as the danzón is at the heart of María Novaro’s luminous tale of a woman’s awakening, a key work of nineties Mexican cinema that became the country’s first film to be featured at Cannes in over a decade. Julia (María Rojo) is a phone operator and single mother in Mexico City who lives for Wednesday nights, when she goes to the Salón Colonia to dance the danzón with Carmelo (Daniel Rergis), her enigmatic longtime partner. When Carmelo mysteriously disappears one day, Julia embarks on an incident-filled journey to Veracruz to find him—and along the way discovers herself.
